Facilitate

In this domain, we conduct research to understand:

  • What are barriers to implementation and sustainment of effective practices.

  • How do systems and personal factors influence sustainment of effective practices.

  • How to organize and assess factors that influence practice sustainment.

Research on barriers to implementation and sustainment of effective practices

Sustaining change is challenging. Understanding the barriers experienced by educators and researchers allows us to make it easier.

Collier-Meek, M. A., Sanetti, L. M. H., & Boyle, A. M. (2019). Barriers to implementing classroom management and behavior support plans: An exploratory investigation. Psychology in the Schools, 56, 5-17.

64% of teacher-identified barriers to delivering behavioral interventions were related to experiences of the teacher, e.g., managing competing responsibilities.

Fallon, L. M., McCarthy, S. R., & Sanetti, L. M. H. (2014). School-wide positive behavioral support (SWPBIS) in the classroom: Assessing perceived challenges in consistent implementation in Connecticut schools. Education and Treatment of Children, 37, 1-24.

50% of teachers reported continuing instruction when problem behavior occurs as a challenge to consistently implementing school-wide PBIS.

Long, A. C. J., Sanetti, L. M. H., Collier-Meek, M. A., Gallucci, J., Altschaefl, M., & Kratochwill, T. R. (2016). An exploratory investigation of teachers’ intervention planning and perceived implementation barriers. Journal of School Psychology, 55, 1-26.

Teachers indicated 58% of barriers to delivering interventions were related to the intervention: compatibility, time required, and materials needed.

Sanetti, L. M. H., & DiGennaro Reed, F. D. (2012). Barriers to implementing treatment integrity procedures in school psychology research: Survey of treatment outcome researchers. Assessment for Effective Intervention, 37, 195-202.

Researchers rated lack of guidelines as well as time, cost and labor demands as the primary reasons for not assessing implementation.

Research on educator well-being—an important factor that influences implementation

When we are stressed, we are less effective. Understanding the interventions that reduce sources of educator stress is essential to sustained practice.

Sanetti, L. M. H., Boyle, A., Magrath, E., Cascio, A., & Moore, E. (2020). Intervening to decrease teacher stress: A review of current research and new directions. Contemporary School Psychology, 57, 1-10. doi: 10.1007/s40688-020-00285-x

A Total Worker Health approach to addressing workplace well-being was adapted for feasible use in schools.

Research on assessment of factors that influence implementation

Assessing factors that could hinder implementation provides information to make sustaining practices easier.

Collier-Meek, M. A., Johnson, A. H., & Sanetti, L. M. H. (2018). Evaluating the fit of the ecological framework for implementation influences. Assessment for Effective Intervention, 45, 14-26.

Teachers’ perceptions of variables that influence implementation include implementation support, school context, implementation barriers, external context, and collegial norms.
